Companies You Do Not Know Exist: Broken Switch Studios

This short write up is the beginning of what should be a great series of articles and interviews with about the rise of Companies You Do Not Know Exist. Sitting home late one night, I had trouble thinking of something to write about. While I was playing some games and browsing the web for anything interesting, it just hit me: BaltimoreGamer’s goal has always been to inform the community of everything related to video games and make sure we highlight the talent in our area. My job as President is to make sure we do just that. I oversee all events we attend, and make sure we report major news. The “major news” also includes up and coming studios.

While I do not want to give too much away, this is just a preview of what can be expected from us in the near future. Many of you may already know that Sid Meier spoke at UMBC on July 28th (keeping up to date reading BaltimoreGamer Articles) and I was right in the front row at the event. Sitting there watching slides, something caught my ear. The name of a company that has been listed on our links page for sometime now and had been mentioned by Sid’s wife, Susan Meier, as part of the regional developers that are new and up and coming. Besides the fact that I was surprised the speakers went that far into their research, I was left thinking…do they REALLY know about Broken Switch Studios? Another question I asked myself was, does anyone else know about Broken Switch Studios?

I’m actually very fortunate to have met Bernard Moore, owner of Broken Switch, during an Innovate Baltimore event. We talked a bit about various topics and he gave me some great advice for becoming a producer in the video game industry. He also informed me that his company had been working on some projects for the Nintendo Wii game system while still looking to move forward to the PS3 and Xbox. Mr. Moore also had something else that interested me greatly, he is African American. Yes, thats right….Broken Switch Studios is the only African American owned AAA studio in the state of Maryland. This automatically puts him into another topic of conversation but unfortunately this is where my article ends. Hopefully I grabbed your attention and you are so interested that when we release the second part to this article you will come back.

If you want a chance to meet Bernard Moore, you can come to the next IGDA meeting on Thursday August 5th at 7PM. The meeting will be at the Treehouse Bar and Grill in Hunt Valley. Until next time, keep reading you BaltimoreGamers!
