Mike Ciance on The Forum is Back - Improved and Expanded!

As any active posters would have noticed, the forum had been down for the past few weeks. When we upgraded the forum to a newer version, there was an error that brought the entire site down. The only way we could get it back was to uninstall the forum.

In these past few weeks we looked over our options. We considered switching to a different forum system and starting over, but in the end we determined that the best solution, at least for the near future, was to try to get the old forum working again.

Just hours ago, we successfully got the forum reinstalled and working. We're also glad to say that this new version seems to be a lot nicer. On top of that, we've made improvements of our own which we think will improve everybody's discussions.

If you look around, you'll notice a ton of new sections to the forum. We've taken great care in reorganizing and expanding the forum structure to better facilitate discussion and to reflect how our audience has evolved. This includes a special area for artists and vendors. It also includes better separation of event types. We now have a sub-forum just for game music concerts, and a sub-forum just for events that are outside of our coverage range, or "Far Away Events."

phpBB has a far superior interface and layout to this forum, as well as many additional features such as seeing who is online. Here is an example from the phpBB website http://www.phpbb.com/community/index.php

It doesn't have to be done right away, but it is something to consider for the future as we grow larger.

Great idea! phpbb offer so many hundreds of free addons and plugins... plus a HUGE community that supports the product. This will allow the forum to grow to any size needed for future projects.

Good idea Mike.

It was recently suggested to me that we use a phpBB forum instead of this forum plugin. The benefits would be that we would get a full-fledged forum with all the perks of a real forum and none of the hassles of this plugin. The drawback would be that accounts could not be linked. You would need to re-register for the forum and your profiles would not be linked. You would have to update in both places.

phpBB was an option we had considered earlier, but decided to go with an integrated forum instead. Now after seeing how mediocre the integrated forum is, I wouldn't mind looking into switching to phpBB.

Any thoughts on this topic?

I've recently made some changes to how our sharing and social bookmarking system works. For a time, we had been using several embedded counters, but they wcausing loading issues so I switched to a plugin that lets me put small icons after each article.

This plugin, called Sociable, has a ton of sites to choose from and is easy to customize. I've added some additional sites that we didn't have before, but I also want feedback from members. Which sharing and bookmarking sites do you use? If I am missing a good site let me know and I can add it in.
