It was recently suggested to me that we use a phpBB forum instead of this forum plugin. The benefits would be that we would get a full-fledged forum with all the perks of a real forum and none of the hassles of this plugin. The drawback would be that accounts could not be linked. You would need to re-register for the forum and your profiles would not be linked. You would have to update in both places.
phpBB was an option we had considered earlier, but decided to go with an integrated forum instead. Now after seeing how mediocre the integrated forum is, I wouldn't mind looking into switching to phpBB.
I don't mind separate registrations as long as there's a good reason. Is there something that you would like to do with the forum that what you're using now can't handle?
Great idea! phpbb offer so many hundreds of free addons and plugins… plus a HUGE community that supports the product. This will allow the forum to grow to any size needed for future projects.
phpBB has a far superior interface and layout to this forum, as well as many additional features such as seeing who is online. Here is an example from the phpBB website http://www.phpbb.com/community/index.php
It doesn't have to be done right away, but it is something to consider for the future as we grow larger.
