Hi everyone! Wondering if I could bother you all with a quick question.
I'm a 33 year old female who's making what is probably a really stupid choice and trying to enter the video game industry somewhat late in life. I'm not even sure if school is a good idea, but since I can't presently get a job of any kind in the industry, it seems like the only option. I read the really good article on this site about picking schools, which listed a number of local programs. I just wondered if anyone here had any specific experience with any of the schools mentioned. I've been looking at UB, only because they seem relatively unselective and willing to basically design a program for you as long as they get paid. But I read terrible, terrible things about them on college rating sites: that the teachers are incompetent, that they teach no specific skills. Anyone been through their SDE program?
Thanks so much for helping a blundering novice.
Margaret

Hey Margaret,
I created this site for a number of reasons and you are one of those
reasons. Sorry for replying late but I hope you see this. There are a
number of programs that you can look at and talk about with me through
email gabriel@baltimoregamer.com or phone.
I am at UB now in the SDE program. You have to be careful though
because each school has a different approach on what skills they focus
on. UMBC, UB and MICA are probably the leaders right now that are local
with University of Penn being another great option.
Thanks for stopping by!

No problem, I have issue answering any questions through email or on our forums. I have my likes and dislikes about each school but I try to let the person make thier own decision based on the given advice.

if your looking to go out of state, Univ of Central Florida has one fo the best VG programs in the country. Every student interns with EA games in Orlando, and EA usually hires from that program as well.

I'm sure Gabriel already answered all of your questions, but school is ALWAYS a good option. It may be difficult to keep up if you intend to do so part time, but companies will prioritize the person with the degree (except in special situations where the person is just that talented).
